Minutes of the Annual Meeting January 18th 2009

 

Ron Seger called the meeting to order at 9.20 a.m. 75 people were in attendance.

The meeting was opened with a prayer by Pastor Emily.

The minutes of the 2008 Annual Meeting were approved as submitted.

 

Pastor Emily reported on the past year to supplement her printed report, and commented on the transitions Calvary has gone through and the challenges we face in 2009.

 

Deacon Tom Smith referred to his printed report and commented that he planned to continue to serve Calvary throughout 2009.

 

Nancy Magurno presented the Stewardship report and thanked everyone for their gifts of time, talents and treasure. She commented that although we have less pledging units for 2009 the average pledge is higher at around $2,000. She urged everyone to review their personal commitment to giving and commented that the Vestry would be looking at additional sources of income in 2009.

 

Jim Cekal presented the Treasurer’s report and thanked the Finance Committee – Jim Adamson, Dennis LeBlanc, Ken Pardue and Carol Halla for their work. He explained the increase in income and reduced expenses compared to the budget for 2008 resulting in a deficit of $5,737. Ruth Ann Castle asked why the Outreach Budget had not been all used. Jim Cekal explained which ministries had received money from the Outreach funds. Hester Bury commented that the Vestry did not make donations to some groups that it had donated to in previous years and were reviewing the best way to use the discretionary donations to outside ministries. John Jaska commented that donations for Calvary’s PADS ministry had been received from the Lombard Bible Church and the Masonic Lodge.

 

Jim Cekal presented the 2009 Budget. He explained that the format had been changed to show fixed costs and variable costs. He reported that our cash position was good and explained the liabilities and restricted funds held for church groups. Pastor Emily thanked Jim for doing a fine job.

 

Committee Reports

Frank Samela, Buildings and Grounds, thanked the snow removal volunteers – Tom Smith Jr., Don Szady, Brian Pfohl, and Ken Pardue and said he could always use volunteers for other projects.

 

Jennifer Ceplecha, Church School Superintendent, commented on our many blessings in the Church School including new curriculums, new teachers, Vacation Bible School and the J2A class. She explained the J2A have an Urban Adventure and Pilgrimage coming up over the next two years for which the class will need contributions of time, planning and fund raising from the whole congregation. Two committees will be formed very soon.

 

Sub Committee Reports

All groups asked members to refer to their printed reports. Jim Adamson encouraged everyone to read the reports. The following comments were added:

Gloria Sparrow, Altar Guild, said they would always welcome new members.

John Jaska, ECM, said there was a typo on the date of the Golf Outing which should be August 22nd.

Ruth Ann Castle, ECW, said there would be an open meeting in April to decide use of funds raised.

Jean Morris, LEMs, thanked all those who visit the shut-ins and said new ministers were always welcome.

Jeri Kellan, Music, thanked the choir and said they would welcome new members.

Hester Bury, Outreach, apologized for not including in her report that the committee was reviewing the Pantry and considering how best to use food donations to serve the community.

Drew Nolan, Worship, thanked all who participate.

Lee Davis reminded everyone that the Prayer Station is available every week after communion for anyone needing special prayers for concerns and thanksgivings. Jan Bruesch and Lee could use help from anyone called to this ministry.

 

The slate of Vestry members was presented, accepted and voted on unanimously. One year terms:  John Jaska – Senior Warden, Jim Adamson- Junior Warden. Three-year terms: Patty LeBlanc- Outreach, Gloria Sparrow – Fellowship, Greg Pardue – Finance.

 

Pastor Emily presented the nominations for Representatives to Diocesan Convention: Regina Crowe, David Pardue and Ethel Samela. Alternates are Lynn Honiotes and Grant Ianelli. The representatives were accepted unanimously.

 

New Business: Pastor Emily thanked the outgoing Vestry members – Ron Seger, John Jaska, Jim Adamson, Karen Newlin and Hester Bury and presented them with a prayer certificate.

 

Ron Seger, Outgoing Senior Warden, commented that we had much to be thankful for in the past year including strong leadership through a period of transition, the Search Committee and the work of all Vestry members. He commented on ways that Calvary has helped the community at home and abroad through the Love Fund, the mosquito nets donation and the resurgence of the Youth Program.

 

John Jaska, Incoming Senior Warden, commented that we had spent 2008 getting settled with Pastor Emily and that he looks forward to 2009 as a time of stability and growth together. He presented Ron Seger with a propane camping grill and lamp.

 

The Necrology was presented by Deacon Tom Smith. Pastor Emily closed with a prayer and the meeting was adjourned at 10.17 a.m.
